Fibromyalgia Pain from Clothing

Many of those who suffer from fibromyalgia are often complaining that no matter what they do, they hurt everywhere. Choosing the right clothes by keeping your fibro symptoms in mind when you shop can help maximize your comfort during the day and night.

The hypersensitivity brought on by fibromyalgia can manifest itself in many forms and may vary with each individual. Some are hypersensitive to light, sound, scents, chemicals, medications, heat and/or cold. But one common and often overlooked source of pain from sensitivity for people with fibromyalgia can stem from your clothing choices.

This sensitivity to clothing cannot be completely ignored, after all, most sufferers must leave their home and continue with their daily life, thus clothes are needed.

However, there are a few tips that you can utilize in order to control the pain level that you feel when wearing certain pieces of clothing.

Buy Clothing to Fit Your Fibromyalgia

People who suffer from fibromyalgia often find that their bodies tend to swell over the course of the day. Keep this in mind when buying clothing, and do not buy clothes that are too tight fitting. Instead, go for clothes that are looser or have some stretch in the fabric. This will ensure that your clothes continue to fit comfortably from morning to night.

Fibro Fabrics

When you buy bedding and clothes, make sure to buy breathable fabrics and natural materials rather than synthetics. Natural fibers breathe with your skin to keep you warm but let perspiration escape so that you do not feel clammy. This also lowers you chances of getting any type of skin irritation.

Go for the most recommended fabrics like silk or satin, cotton, stretchy knits, fleece, cashmere and flannel since these fibers are natural, soft and lighter weight. Every little bit helps, so find what makes you comfortable and buy it in every color and avoid anything that scratches. A cashmere throw is also a soft, comfy option

Underwear and Bras

With all the wires and straps, not to mention their close proximity to the skin, it is no wonder that bras are high on the list of clothing that causes chronic pain among women with fibromyalgia. Many women with fibromyalgia will actually not wear bras because of the uncomfortable feeling.

To make sure that underwear and bras help rather than harm, opt for loose fitting, not constrictive styles that are easy to pull on and off. Also, choose underwear and bras that are made of soft cotton rather than harsh synthetic fabrics.

Nighttime Comfort: Pajamas

If you suffer from fibromyalgia, you know that you get cold and hot during the day as well as at night. You can keep your sleep less disturbed by bodily temperature changes if you go to be prepared. Even if you are cold when you go to bed, avoid wearing heavy pajamas at night.

Instead, go for light or mid-weight, breathable pajamas throughout the year and make sure that you have plenty of blankets of varying warmth that you can layer on your bed instead. Choose drawstrings, as it generally offer more comfort than elastic, because they are adjustable and do not squeeze as much. Some people even try removing the elastic in pajamas to relieve it. Get creative and find what makes you the most comfortable.

Socks: Elastic Nightmare

When a person with fibromyalgia wears socks that have elastic in these that are rather tight, they will find that the pain becomes worse. They may have trouble walking, and can even feel the pain radiating from their lower back and hips. So find a sock that is made from a thinner fabric.
