Does Myers Cocktail Work for Fibromyalgia?

Myers Cocktail for Fibromyalgia

If you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM), you may be wondering how you can ease the chronic and widespread pain and tenderness that come with that diagnosis.  One of the newer potential treatments is the Myers Cocktail, an intravenous mixture of minerals, vitamins and nutrients designed to help the body operate at optimum levels. Although not many rigorous scientific tests have been done on this treatment, a great deal of anecdotal evidence exists to support its effectiveness, especially for the treatment of FM.

Many treatment centers for FM are heavily promoting the use of Myers cocktail. The advertisements often boast that you can receive up to sixty percent reduction in pain and an eighty percent reduction in fatigue. They also claim that you will notice these symptom improvements within two days of receiving the treatment.

The treatment is considered to be a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), not traditional treatment, which contains prescribed medications. However, people often are willing to try new approaches because living with FM is quite challenging and FM symptoms can be so persistent.

The minerals and vitamins contained in the Myers cocktail are important in the normal functioning of muscles and nerves (calcium and magnesium), metabolism and conversion of food into energy (vitamin B complex), and protection against cell damage (vitamin C). These vitamins and minerals also help ease fibromyalgia pain and other symptoms, such as profound fatigue.

While the magnesium, vitamins, and glutathione directly support energy production, the other nutrients help improve detoxification and reduce inflammation. As well, higher levels of magnesium reduce tight muscles and relax the nervous system.

The Myers cocktail contains a variety of nutrients:

The mixture is given through the intravenous route, so your digestive system is bypassed, and a much higher level of nutrients is directly delivered to your cells throughout the bloodstream. It is infused over a slow drip that can take between thirty to sixty minutes.

The patients who experience relief with this treatment usually see an improvement after six weeks. After the eight week protocol is completed, a maintenance program is continued as needed, which usually requires monthly Myers cocktail infusions. Since this medication is controlled intravenously, you will need to set aside some time for the infusion to be completed.

Scientific look at the effects of the Myers cocktail are not enough to convincingly say that the intravenous infusion improves FM symptoms. Though the studies conducted into Myers cocktail infusions indicate that it is a safe treatment. However, for people who want it and who might feel better afterwards, may experience some local redness from the site or may experience a warm feeling in their arm. These are not common reactions and no other side effects are generally noted after this type of infusion.

As it is safe, it may be a treatment to consider when dealing with persistent chronic pain conditions, like:

The Myers Cocktail is most effective for FM when combined with a traditional approach to treatment, which usually includes arginine, prescription medications, and potentially other holistic approaches like acupuncture, massage and psychotherapy. Your healthcare team can help you come up with the best set of therapies for your specific case.
