Managing Your Symptoms
When you struggle daily with the pain, fatigue and brain fog of fibromyalgia, it can quickly become frustrating and exhausting especially since there’s no cure or one-size-fits-all treatment. Finding a product or technique to help ease your symptoms is often an ongoing process of trial and error that usually involves a combination of treatments rather than one single “fix.”
Although there is likely no single item that will totally alleviate your fibro symptoms, many of those in the chronic illness community have found some products (or a combination of products) that help them push through even their toughest flare days. Many of us “nest” when we have flares, basically holing up in one spot such as the bed or couch.
These little are best kept where you nest, so you don’t have to get up to get them. Some are treatments and others aren’t, but they’re all things that might help you get through the day (or night,) don’t require a prescription and won’t drain your bank account.

Salonpas Pain Relieving Patches
Salonpas patches are applied on your body directly where you’re hurting and have a topical analgesic that can help relieve muscle aches and pains. They offer several types of patches (i.e. some contain lidocaine, while others provide heat) depending on the type and level of your pain. Danielle Bennett said the patches help with pain spots. Blythe Varney added, “Expensive, but so good at easing sharper pains.”
Rice bag
A rice bag is uncooked rice inside a little pillow, usually made of flannel or some fabric that feels nice against your skin. You heat it in the microwave for a couple minutes and it releases a soothing, slightly moist heat. It’s a great alternative to a heating pad because it gradually cools off and won’t start a fire, so you can use it to help you sleep. (Mine also has a flannel pillow case so I have more control over how much heat is against my skin.)
Magnesium lotion
Magnesium is a nutrient that has many health benefits for the average person, but for those with fibromyalgia, its anti-inflammatory properties can be especially helpful. Some use magnesium lotion and let it absorb through their skin. Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any supplements. Nancy Nishihira told us she uses magnesium lotion for muscle aches, and Shannon Franklin added that magnesium helps her tremendously with muscle and nerve pain.
Blankets, pillows and beddings
The more sedentary you are, the more important it is to have a comfortable place that’s ready for you at a moment’s notice. Even in the summer, you should have a lavishly soft blanket handy in your family room as well as a diversity of cozy-feeling pillows. Also, coarse sheets are like sleeping on sandpaper! I prefer flannel or jersey, or a high thread count. Feel before you buy! Click Here to buy Fibromyalgia Pillows
Yeti Hand Warmers
Not only do these gloves look awesome, but they plug in via a USB cord to warm your hands. If you have Raynaud’s phenomenon or get cold often, these fun hand warmers may help. (They also come in slippers, too!) Carrie Meyer said she likes using her Yeti Hands in combination with magnesium lotion, essential oils and heating pads.
Dark chocolate
It may sound strange, but dark chocolate may boost your serotonin levels, which means it can make you feel more awake and alert plus give you a mood lift. To get the full effect, get the really dark stuff — like 85% cocoa.
Heated Blanket
Not only can a heated throw blanket help keep you warm, but the heat may also be beneficial in soothing some of your aches and pains. Samantha Louise Quy told us her heated throw is a lifesaver. The more sedentary you are, the more important it is to have a comfortable place that’s ready for you at a moment’s notice. Even in the summer, I have a luxuriously soft blanket handy in my family room as well as a variety of cozy-feeling pillows. Also, coarse sheets are like sleeping on sandpaper! I prefer flannel or jersey, or a high thread count. Feel before you buy!. Click Here to read on heated blanket for fibromyalgia pain relief
Chillow Pillow
The Chillow Pillow is a cooling gel pad you can use to ease hot flashes or aches and pains due to fibro. You can place it under your back, wrap it around an arm or leg or even put it under your pillow to keep you cool while you sleep. Donna Lear Lambro said, “I put my Chillow Pillow used for hot flashes under my back. The fold numbs the pain so I can fall asleep.”
Tennis Balls
If your muscles are aching and in need of some massaging, a tennis ball may be a helpful tool, you could roll it back and forth where you’re tense or use it to put pressure on trigger points. Tanya Fierro said she uses tennis balls for trigger points in her neck, shoulders and back.
Skechers
If you struggle with fibromyalgia, finding shoes that are tolerable on your feet may be a challenge. However, many of those with fibro have found Skechers to be a viable option. Cinthia Kerr told us, “Nothing helps with my pain, but Skechers Life Savers help ease my feet on long days. Best I found so far.”
Thera Cane Massager
Although this device may look a bit odd, it is actually the perfect shape for massaging parts of your back you cannot reach. The multiple treatment balls allow you to work on multiple areas at one time. For those with fibro, this can be helpful in easing sore and tight muscles.
Essential Oils
Essential oils can do a lot more than make your home smell nice. Different types are known to have different healing properties, both physical and emotional. Leslie P. McMillan recommended, “Frankincense essential oil. It helps with emotional issues and painful muscles.” The Fibro Natural Club told us that essential oils such as lavender, cedarwood, patchouli and clary sage help them sleep, and Carrie Meyer added that blends of peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender and lemon are good for relaxing.
Dry shampoo
We all have those days when we’re in a rush to get out of the house. Trust me dry shampoo will be your new best friend.
Soft backpack
For women who carry a purse, a soft backpack can be a more comfortable option, as it carries what you need and distributes the weight evenly. It relieves the strain and pain of carrying a purse on your shoulder or arm.
Nail clippers
This might sound like an odd one, but you’ve been kept awake more than once by too-long toe nails scratching against a sheet or blanket. Might as well be a chalkboard!

Pill organizer
Fibro fog can make us second-guess whether we have taken our medications and supplements. One way to get around that is to use a pill organizer. There are so many from which to choose: Clear, colored, once-a-day or multiple times a day, etc. This is the one I prefer because it’s unobtrusive and easy to fill all at once.
Massage tools
Gently getting kinks out of your muscles can really help you feel better! I prefer using vibrating massagers, but be cautious for those! You will have days when your skin almost seems to crawl and your nerves are really jumpy. On those days, the vibration does far more harm than good.
Microwaveable heating pads
The reason I prefer these instead of a hot-water bottle is that they mold to the area you want to heat. They come in various sizes, colors and fabrics. You can heat them up at home, or at work, as well. Heat is the comforting friend of those of us with FM.
eZ MELTS supplements
I love these supplements because they melt in your mouth, and each type is a different flavor. If you have issues with swallowing pills, then prefer something that is easy to take. Use the probiotic, B12, D3, CoQ10, melatonin, and others. They also don’t upset my stomach as some pills do. They get directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive process. As with all supplements, you should discuss with your doctor what supplements are safe and the right choice for you. It also is recommended that you take them with meals so they are more bioavailable.
Head to toe cleansing clothes
This is for those days when taking a shower takes more energy than you have, but you want to quickly freshens up. Although these are meant for babies, they are larger and thicker than ordinary baby wipes.
